Officers and board members

AROHE board members are volunteers who are leaders from associations of retired faculty and staff, administrators of campus-based retiree centers or emeriti colleges or campus administrators who oversee programs for academic retirees. Board meetings are held via conference call on the first Monday of each month, 10:30 a.m. Pacific time. Any AROHE member may join a board meeting by contacting the AROHE office for call-in information prior to the meeting. Click here to view board and committee descriptions.

Patrick Cullinane, President
 

Patrick Cullinane, President

Patrick Cullinane recently retired as director of the Retirement Center at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to UC Berkeley, Patrick directed special projects at the American Society on Aging. Over 46 professional years, he has addressed many issues affecting older populations and rural health and mental health needs. He holds an M.S. in community development from Southern Illinois University and a B.S. in psychology from St. Louis University.    Return to Officers

Caroline Kane, President-Elect

Carol Kane is a retired biochemistry faculty member and co-founder of the Biology
Scholars Program at UC Berkeley whose 25+ year career has included work toward equity and access to higher education for underrepresented students, locally and
nationally. She is active in retiree issues on campus and nationwide through the UC Berkeley Emeriti Association. She received her Ph.D. degree from UC Berkeley.

Trudy Fernandez

Trudy Fernandez, Secretary

Trudy Fernandez serves as the director of human resources relations at Florida International University. She provides vision and leadership in planning programs, events, and new initiatives designed to enhance the human resource function. She is a Positive Living Awards committee member for the Alliance for Aging, Inc., in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties in Florida. She earned an M.S. degree in human resource management at the FIU Chapman Graduate School of Business.     Return to Officers

Diane Mundy, Treasurer

Diane Mundy, Treasurer

Diane Mundy retired after serving 35-plus years at the University of California, Davis in the Accounting and Financial Services Department. She held the title of accountant and later became a division manager. Diane has served for the last three years as treasurer for the UC Davis Retirees’ Association (UCDRA). She has a B.S. degree in accountancy from Sacramento State University.     Return to Officers

Sue Barnes, Past-President

Sue Barnes is the director of the Emeriti/Retirees Relations Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she oversees programs and services to keep 10,000+ retired faculty and staff connected to the campus. Prior to working at UCLA, she held a variety of management positions at UC Davis for nearly 22 years, including director of the UC Davis Retiree Center. She has developed and overseen a variety of service and volunteer programs for all age groups but she feels a special connection with retirees in higher education. She holds a B.S. degree in visual communication from Western Washington University.  Return to Officers

Janette C. Brown, Executive Director  

Janette C. Brown, Executive Director

Janette Brown is assistant vice provost of the USC Emeriti Center/Emeriti College and adjunct faculty at the USC Davis School of Gerontology at University of Southern California. As the volunteer executive director of AROHE, she has conducted research on issues relevant to seniors, including development of the first online instrument to gather retiree programs and services data at universities in the United States and Canada. She has given conference and workshop presentations in the US, Canada, Taiwan and Germany, provided consulting advice for universities and has authored and co-authored book chapters for the American Council on Education and the European Research Institute on Health and Aging. Janette holds M.Ed. and Ed.D degrees from the University of Southern California. http://emeriti.usc.edu

John Bugge   

John Bugge

John Bugge is a retired English professor who chairs the executive committee of the Emory University Emeritus College in Atlanta. He served for 15 years as president of the Emory chapter of the American Association of University Professors. He holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard.

Jeri I. Frederick, Communications Chair

Jeri I. Frederick is the founding director of the University of California, Irvine’s, Center for Emeriti & Retirees. After managing the 60% growth of another department on campus, Jeri was asked to create a Center forging continuing connections between dedicated emeriti and retirees, the community and their University. The adventure began with no office space, no database, no budget, no communications and no programming. Within three years, all of these items were developed, functioning and flourishing. Ms. Frederick holds a B.A. in translation with a minor in administrative services and is pursuing an M.S. in gerontology.

Ram Chugh

Fanchon Funk

Fanchon (“Fancy”) Funk, a faculty member at FSU from 1970-2004, served as president of the FSU Association of Retired Faculty and worked in several administrative positions. As a past AROHE board member she serves on the communications and membership committees. In 2010-2012, she initiated the development of an AROHE Governance Manual. In 2009, she was designated as the Regional Conference Coordinator. She earned two B.S.degrees from Western Carolina in biology and education, an M.A. degree from Appalachian State in education and the Ed.D. degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in curriculum, higher education and public health.

Larry Gahan

Lawrence (Larry) Gahan received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from University of llinois in Recreation and Park Administration. He taught at Clemson University in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management from 1968 until 2000. He has served on two national boards: National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Board of Trustees and the Commissioners/Board Members Branch of NRPA. While at Clemson he served as a member of the University Assessment Committee and as chair for one year. In 1984 he was appointed as an Alumni Distinguished Professor for outstanding teaching. He currently serves on the Emeritus College Advisory Board.

  Carl Huether

Carl Huether retired seven years ago from the University of Cincinnati as Professor Emeritus of Biology, after 41 years on the faculty. He is currently serving as President of the Emeritus Association at UC. He and the Emeriti Board are working closely with the Provost office to significantly increase Emeriti activities at the university. He holds a B. S. from the Ohio State University, an M. S. from North Carolina State University, and Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis.

Susan Kress

Susan Kress

Susan Kress recently retired from her position as vice president for academic affairs and professor of English at Skidmore College in New York where she served for 37 years. She led the team that prepared the application for an ACE/Sloan award of $100,000 in recognition of Skidmore’s retiree transition programs. She earned her B.A. from Manchester University (England) and Ph.D. from Cambridge University.

Ann M. Kohner

Bill Lemman

Bill was born on September 6. 1925 in Beaumont, Texas. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946. He received a B.S. degree in business administration from the University of Oregon in 1949. He held various administrative positions at Portland State College and Oregon State University from 1950 to 1959. He was the vice president for business & finance at Portland State University from 1959 to 1973. He was the vice chancellor - personnel and administration and executive vice chancellor for the Oregon University System from 1974 to 1990 and the president of the Oregon Institute of Technology from 1990 to 1991.

Sheryl Maxwell

Sheryl A. Maxwell joined University of Memphis Association of Retirees (UMAR) upon her retirement in 2009. She holds a B.A. degree from the University of Northern Colorado (1965), an M.A.T. degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha (1986), and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Virginia (1994). Sheryl’s teaching career culminated with her teaching mathematics and mathematics education courses at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Christopher Newport University, The College of William & Mary, and University of Memphis. She was the president of the Research Council on Mathematics Learning (2003-2005), U of M Faculty Senate (2005-2006), and UMAR (2012-14).

Pierce Mullen

Pierce Mullen is a native of Hastings, Nebraska. He received his B.A. degree from
Hastings College, his M.A. degree from University of Nebraska, Lincoln and his Ph.D. degree from UC Berkeley. He taught History of Science at MSU Bozeman from 1963 to 1996. He served as the department chair 1969-75. He received summer humanities grants from UC Santa Barbara in 1975 and Harvard in 1979. Since retirement he has taught numerous Elderhostel Lewis and Clark sessions. He has been married to his wife Margie for 56 years and has two terrific daughters and four over-achieving grandchildren.

Claire Van Ummersen

Claire Van Ummersen is senior advisor to the Division of Leadership Programs at the American Council on Education, and president and professor emerita of Cleveland State University. She has served as vice-president and director of the Office of Women in Higher Education and also as director of the Center for Effective Leadership at ACE. Since 2003 she has been responsible for the ACE/Sloan Partnership researching work/life flexibility for faculty – from recruitment to retirement and beyond. Understanding and raising awareness of the role that retirement organizations play is critical to smooth transitions for faculty to an engaged retirement.
